Employers Must Post Injury/Illness Summary Beginning February 1 OSHA reminds employers of their obligation to post a copy of OSHA’s Form 300A, which summarizes job-related injuries and illnesses logged during 2017. Each year, between Feb. 1 and April 30, the summary must be displayed in a common area where notices to employees are usually posted. Businesses with 10 or fewer employees and those in certain low-hazard industries are exempt from OSHA recordkeeping and posting requirements. BLS Releases Census of 2016 Fatal Occupational Injuries. The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released its National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries in 2016, which reports a 7 percent increase from 2015. More workers lost their lives in transportation incidents than any other event in 2016. Workplace violence injuries increased by 23 percent, making it the second most common cause of workplace fatality.

OSHA Adjusts Penalty Amounts for 2018. On Jan. 2, civil penalty amounts for violations of workplace safety and health standards increased by two percent from last year. New penalties for willful and repeat violations are $129,336 per violation; serious, other-than-serious, and posting requirements are $12,934 per violation; and failure to correct violations is $12,934 for each day the condition continues.

Top 10 OSHA Violations Announced at National Safety Congress. OSHA Deputy Director of Enforcement Programs Patrick Kapust has announced the list of 10 standards most frequently cited by the agency’s inspectors during Fiscal Year 2017. OSHA publicizes the Top 10 list to increase awareness of these standards so employers can take steps to find and fix the hazards to prevent injury or illness. Fall protection was the most-cited standard for the seventh year in a row, followed by Hazard Communication, and Scaffolding.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued a final rule to modernize injury data collection to better inform workers, employers, the public and OSHA about workplace hazards. Under the new rule, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2017, certain employers will be required to electronically submit injury and illness data for posting on the agency's website. This rule also provides new anti-retaliation protections for employees effective August 1, 2016.
